Who we are.

Operation Legalise Abortion is an organic movement by a group of women, for women. We seek to return women’s rights to them. We believe Nigerian women should have legal reproductive rights to safe abortion.

Why we exist.

To speak of Abortion and Reproductive rights publicly in Nigeria is almost taboo.

Medical practitioners withhold information in fear of having their licences stripped, Religious leaders, condemn the notion of it and dangerous means to terminate pregnancies are then whispered and propagated by women.

When governments criminalise abortions and restrict access to safe abortions, women are forced to seek out unsafe abortions, especially those who cannot afford proper means or are not properly educated on the topic.

Criminalising abortion does not stop abortions, it just makes abortion risky. It does not mean women and girls stop needing one. It only forces them to seek out unsafe means.

Nigeria accounts for 20% of global estimates of abortion-related deaths. Of the 67,800 women that die from abortion each year, only 300 occur in countries with legalized abortion.

We intend to enlighten society on the need to legalise abortion, by stripping away the myths and perceptions held by members of society and persuade thought leaders and legislators into legalizing access to safe, legal, abortion.

What we seek to change.

We respect the right of the individual woman to make an informed choice if they are faced with a pregnancy they do not want, or intend to keep.

We believe that these choices include the choice to carry the pregnancy full term and to keep the child, and the choice to access free, legal, confidential, and safe abortion. When undertaken by a trained health-care provider in sanitary conditions, abortions are one of the safest medical procedures available, safer even than childbirth.

We believe that every woman should be allowed the right to her own life and body.

Denying a woman the option of terminating a pregnancy is denying her the right to bodily autonomy.

This is what we, #OperationLegaliseAbortion, seek to change.
